HISTORY OF TOURNAMENT SINCE 1990 |
This year is the 10th anniversary of the Monarch Assurance International,
and because of this, the previous winners, where possible, are being
invited back. |
Our first winner was Colin Crouch, followed by Colin McNab; |
1997 was the year of Alexander 'O'Baburin who remained undefeated, now an Irish National, Alex is also a well-known chess journalist |
1998 and 1999 saw a former world junior champion, Emil Sutovsky from
Israel, winning. Emil is also quite a renowned opera singer, we made
him sing for his supper last year. |
The year 2000 saw the victory of one of our most popular English G.M.s the
Terence Chapman Grand Prix winner, Mark Hebden. |
Now for 2001, we have gathered together a number of G.M.s and l.M.s from all parts of the world, so come along and enjoy our superb tournament, be you a G.M. or a rabbit, you will be treated with respect and courtesy by all of us here. |
My grateful thanks to Monarch Assurance once again, for their continued
support, and to the Isle of Man Tourist Board, the Cherry Orchard Hotel
and Port Erin Commissioners. These people are our backbone, without
them, this event would not be as well-known as it is. |
Come and enjoy the wonderful Isle of Man, play chess, and win some money,
but most of all enjoy yourself. |

THE
ISLE OF MAN |
||
The
Isle of Man is situated at the approximate centre of the Irish Sea. It is
some 32 miles long and 11 miles wide and has a population of some |
||
The Island is steeped in history and Tynwald - the Parliament - is the
oldest continuous legislature in the world with its millennium having been
celebrated in 1979. Whilst the Manx climate is basically
'temperate', the warming effect of the Gulf Stream, which touches the
Island's coasts and shores, produces an abundance of palm trees in many
places. |
||
Wildlife and scenic beauty abound and the tranquil pace of life - outside of Douglas - provides an ideal atmosphere for the visitor.
Port Erin itself was originally a fishing village, which has developed into a peaceful tourist resort cum residential suburb. It is the terminus for the legendary Isle of Man Steam Railway and the Southern route of the Island's bus service. The resident population of some 3,000 people enjoy magnificent scenic surroundings, a superb curving sandy beach, excellent shopping facilities, a testing 18-hole moorland golf course and a variety of stunning walks and historical artefacts.
Whilst the Isle of Man and, indeed, Port Erin, are 'steeped in history',
the Cherry Orchard Hotel is far from an ancient monument.
Purpose-built some 20 years ago, the hotel's modest exterior belies the
modern day comforts within. The range of superb accommodation
includes single, double, twin, king-size, family and four-poster
bedrooms-all en suite - which are equipped with facilities to cover most
people's requirements. One and two-bedroomed apartments are
available, each containing a fully fitted kitchen,
bathroom and lounge, together with a sofa-bed.
Such apartments
will therefore accommodate
2-4 or 4-6 guests respectively, and can be utilised as self-catering units
or with occupants taking meals in the hotel's restaurants or bars. |
||
All guests enjoy free use of the hotel's indoor heated swimming pool,
jacuzzi, sauna, gym and other leisure facilities. The spacious
function rooms provide a light, airy and very comfortable playing area as
does the 'overspill' facility at the Erin Arts Centre. |
||
Last year's Tournament was a huge success - why not combine pleasure with
pleasure and join us in 2001? |
